Energy Storage Mechanism

  • Our body always need some energy to keep on living: the heart keep pumping the blood, the muscle keep moving, the lung keep breathing without ever stopping. All those activity needs energy.
  • But our intake of energy is periodic (we don't eat all the time, right?). So, the body need some mechanism to store energy for future use.
  • The energy can be stored generally as fat or carbohydrate
  • Fat is more efficient in storing energy than carbohydrate. 1 gram fat can store 9 kilo-calories energy, while 1 gr carbohydrate can only store 4 kilo-calories of energy.
  • So, by nature, our body will store that energy as fat.

Energy Burning Mechanism

  • When our body need some energy, it just takes it back from the deposit that has been stored. (Convert the fat back to energy ==> burn the fat)
  • But, on the other hand, if we do more intense activity (which require a lot of energy rapidly), the body will mainly get the energy from carbohydrate. Why? Because carb are stored mainly as glycogen in the muscle. So taking energy directly from the muscle is faster than taking energy from main fat storage from stomach.
  • So, if you want to reduce your excess fat, you cannot do high intense activity such as running, weight lifting, skipping, etc.... those activities will build up your muscles. Although it's not a bad thing, but if your goal is to reduce your weight, it's not an easy thing to achieve. The reason is because muscle is denser than fat (heavier) and after those activity your body will signal that it need some serious energy replacement (a.k.a starving) - you probably see it first hand on TV how the "Biggest Loser" contestant struggle with it...
By understanding these energy storage and burning mechanism above, you can conclude that fat is easier to accumulate but more difficult to be eliminated. This explains why generally people tend to gain weight than lose weight over time (again- generally).

So, how to do it easier ?

Introducing: Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Concept

  • Even without any active activity, our body always need energy all the time. E.g: for breathing, for pumping blood all over the body, for standing, talking, etc
  • The total energy needed even without any activity at all, is called RMR or Resting Metabolic Rate.
  • Every person have different RMR depending upon their own health condition, genetic, fitness level, etc.
  • A person will gain weight if the energy intake (eating) is more than the RMR. Of course, if the amount of energy intake is less then RMR , he/she will lose weight. Simple concept.

Important factor: Human body is designed for survival

  • That is: if you reduce your eating (and feel starving), the body will recognized it as a signal to conserve energy
  • Our body will go to "energy saving mode" - on other word, our RMR will be lower....
  • So dieting by eating less than needed, will not as effective because the amount of energy burning 24hrs a day is also less - Furthermore you will feel awful as well and not feeling very flash because you starve yourself.

The Best Solution

  • Of course if you eat very very little you may lose weight overtime (Energy intake is less than RMR), but you will be in starvation, suffering, lack of energy and will be hard to do about anything. This is no good for your health and certainly not a good solution.
  • Fortunately, there is alternative... How about if we can increase the RMR ? So, you can eat the same amount (no hungry feeling), but at the same time still losing weight because the energy intake is less than the RMR !!
